Augusta, Ga. - David Marouls two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Augusta GreenJackets a 3-2 victory over the Charleston RiverDogs at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Wednesday night.
The RiverDogs (13-14 second half, 51-46 overall) fell to eight games behind the first-place GreenJackets (21-6, 60-37), who have won 19 of their last 23 games.
Charleston starting pitcher
Erick Abreu was locked in a pitchers duel with Augustas Ryan Shaver through six innings. Eugenio Velez, who had hit two homers at Columbus on Tuesday, put the GreenJackets ahead 1-0 with a two-out blast to right in the fourth.
The RiverDogs took the lead with two runs in the seventh against Shaver.
Tim Battle led off with an infield hit, stole second base and scored the tying run on a single to right by
Irwil Rojas. After a single by
Estee Harris and
Mario Holmanns sacrifce bunt,
Austin Jackson drove in Rojas with a sacrifice fly for a 2-1 Charleston advantage.
Kyle Haines singled off Abreu to start the bottom of the inning and was sacrificed to second. Charleston then brought in
R.J. Swindle, who hadnt allowed a hit to a left-handed batter all season until Ben Copelands game-tying double delivered Haines to tie the game at 2-2.
Swindle (1-1) retired six of the next seven Augusta batters before Antoan Richardson bunted for a single with one out in the bottom of the ninth. After Copeland reached on a fielders choice,
Cory Stuart came in to face Maroul. Copeland stole second base, took third on a throwing error by RiverDogs catcher Rojas, and scored when Maroul lined his game-winning hit to center.
Kelvin Pichardo (1-0), pitching his second game for the GreenJackets, tossed the final two innings for the win.
Rojas and Harris led Charleston with two hits apiece; Velez and Anthony Contreras each had two hits for Augusta.
