Another Tough Road Loss

Columbus, Ga. - The Columbus Catfish twice overcame four-run deficits on their way to a 9-8 triumph over the Charleston RiverDogs on Wednesday. After consecutive one-run losses, the RiverDogs (6-8 second half, 44-40 overall) have a 1-9 mark this year at Golden Park. The Catfish (8-6, 45-39) hold a 13-5 edge over Charleston in the season series.

Sergio Pedroza, who leads the South Atlantic League in homers (18) and RBIs (69), hit a game-tying two-run shot off Jim Conroy in the sixth inning. The two-out blast was Pedroza’s fourth long ball against Charleston pitching this season.

The RiverDogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as their first four batters of the game hit safely. Jose Tabata doubled in a run and Ben Jones drove him in with a single.

Charleston went ahead 5-1 with three runs in the fourth. Austin Jackson, who finished 3-for-5, delivered an RBI double, Jones was hit by a David Pfeiffer pitch to force in a run, and Marcos Vechionacci’s two-out single capped the rally.

Columbus responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, then the RiverDogs got a run-scoring double from Eduardo Nunez in the fifth and a two-run triple by Kevin Nelson in the sixth for an 8-4 advantage.

The Catfish sent ten batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five times to take the lead. After a sacrifice fly by Ivan DeJesus and an RBI single off the bat of Shane Justis, Conroy (2-4) replaced Cory Stuart and surrendered Pedroza’s blast to right field.

A walk to Russ Mitchell, a wild pitch and David Sutherland’s single produced the lead run for Columbus.

Arismendy Castillo (6-1) was credited with the win despite allowing two runs on three hits in 2-1/3 innings. Matt Gomez de Segura recorded his third save, retiring Jones with the potential tying run in scoring position to end the game.

Charleston outhit the Catfish 12-8 and received nine walks, but stranded 14 runners including eight in scoring position.
