RiverDogs Receive Rude Greeting From Tourists

Asheville, NC - Kyle Blumenthal and Eric Young homered to lead a 14-hit Asheville attack as the Tourists defeated the Charleston RiverDogs by a score of 10-3 before a crowd of 2,912 at McCormick Field on Saturday.

Asheville (16-12) won its third straight game as the RiverDogs (18-11) lost for just the third time in 16 games since April 21st.

Jose Tabata launched his third homer of the year, a two-run shot to left off Zach Simons in the first inning, to put Charleston ahead 2-0.

After the Tourists scored a run in the second, Jose Gil’s two-out RBI single in the fourth inning gave the RiverDogs a 3-1 lead.

Charleston starter Abel Gomez entered the game with an ERA of 0.86, but gave up three runs on seven hits in 4-1/3 innings. The left-hander was relieved by David Seccombe after allowing a run-scoring double by Young in the fifth. Seccombe (2-2) struck out his first batter, but Blumenthal put Asheville ahead to stay with a two-run blast to right for a 4-3 Tourists advantage.

Simons (3-1) lasted six innings for the win, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three. The RiverDogs were held to just one hit after the fourth inning as relievers Chad Bailey, Byron Binda and James Burok each pitched a hitless inning.

Seccombe gave up three more runs on four hits in the sixth, and Young’s three-run homer off Steve Schroer in the eighth gave the Tourists a 10-3 lead.

The bottom third of Asheville’s order – Travis Becktel, Michael Paulk and Cole Garner – combined for seven hits, five runs scored and two RBIs.

Ben Jones, just added to the Charleston roster after beginning the season with Tampa in the Florida State League, led the RiverDogs with two hits.
