RiverDogs Boil Crawdads, 7-3

CHARLESTON, SC – Tommy Baldridge collected three hits and knocked in the game-winning run that capped a five-run eighth inning as the RiverDogs boiled the Crawdads, 7-3, in South Atlantic League action Monday in front of 2,095 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Charleston scored five runs on three hits and capitalized on six Hickory errors as the RiverDogs sent nine men to the plate.  Highlighting the ninth frame were Taylor Grote’s game-tying RBI single and Baldridge’s RBI single.

Entering the ninth with runners on first and second with one out, RiverDogs reliever Jonathan Ortiz (SV, 3) locked down the Charleston triumph by walking one batter striking out two.  Ortiz’s save tied the RiverDogs’ All-Time saves record with 36 that is shared with Kerry Lacey, which was originally set in 1993.

With the victory, Charleston improves to 8-10 in the season’s second half (47-41 overall) while Hickory slips to 10-7 (43-43).

Following a 61-minute rain delay after the first inning, the RiverDogs jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second when Addison Maruszak smacked a leadoff single and advanced to second on Tommy Baldridge’s infield single.  The bases were loaded when Chase Weems drew a walk and then Jose Pirela was hit by a pitch that brought home Maruszak and kept the bases full.  Abraham Almonte lifted a sacrifice fly to left that brought home Baldridge for the second run.

Hickory captured a 3-2 advantage in the fifth when Cristian Santana hammered a leadoff solo shot over the left-center field wall for his eighth home run of the season.  The next batter, Miguel Alfonzo, was hit by a pitch and stole second.  After Leury Garcia reached on an infield single, the runners sprinted into scoring position with a successful double steal.  David Paisano knocked in Alfonzo on a groundout and Charleston reliever Dan Kapala uncorked a wild pitch that plated Garcia.

Charleston reliever Luke Prihoda (1-0) earned his first win of the season after he tossed 1.1 scoreless frames and scattered two hits and three strikeouts.

Hickory reliever Mark Hamburger (2-7) suffered the defeat after he was charged with five unearned runs on three hits, two walks and one strikeout.

Crawdads starter Wilfredo Boscan did not re-enter the game after the rain delay and received a no-decision after he held Charleston scoreless while he allowed one hit one strikeout in one inning of work.

Brandon Braboy, in his first spot start of the season, also earned a no-decision as he went four-plus innings and allowed a run while scattering two hits and walking two.

Charleston collected eight hits on the night with Baldridge’s three knocks leading the way while Hickory’s Santana ratcheted two of the Crawdads five hits.

Game 2 of this four-game series is set for Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. as the RiverDogs send right-hander David Phelps (9-2, 2.77 ERA) to the hill while the Crawdads oppose with righty Joe Wieland (2-1, 3.50 ERA).
